Let's Talk About Skin, Baby!!

Hello Everyone!! I hope everyone is well and in great spirits!

Today I want to talk about SKIN!!

Have you ever thought about the TRUE function of your skin? Here are some facts about skin functionality.
  •    It protects ALL of our organs
  •    It helps maintain body temperature
  •    It is home to all our nerve receptors…this is how we feel sensations like hot/cold.

Yes!! Our skin is a major deal and properly caring for it is a major deal! Our skin is our FIRST defense. I don’t know about you…but I need my first defense to be strong so it can continue to properly protect me from harmful elements.

Exactly what is our skin composed of?

Our skin is composed of 3 layers.
  1.   The outside layer, called the epidermis. The epidermis is responsible for making new cells.  Just think! As you are sitting here reading this article your body is shedding anywhere from 30k-40k cells per minute. Whoa!!! This is where exfoliation comes in. Exfoliation helps to remove our dead skin cells to aid in the regeneration of new ones.
  2. The next layer is the dermis. The dermis is just beneath the epidermis. This is home to our nerve endings, blood vessels, and our sweat and oil glands. Collagen can also be found in this layer of skin. This is a pretty important layer of skin. The blood vessels that live here deliver and supply nutrients and oxygen to our skin. I know we've all heard of sebum, our natural oil that our body produces, is made in this layer and distributed. Sebum is our waterproof shield.
  3. The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat. This layer of skin is mostly made of fat. It aids in warming our body and it also absorbs the shock when we fall or hit something.

Taking proper care of our precious skin is essential. It cannot be emphasized enough.

I will highlight some very simple things that can be done to help care for your skin.
  •   Cleanse your skin according to your skin type. Just as it’s is recommended not to use sulfates in our hair because it strips away our natural oils. Our skin is no different. Cleansers should be sulfate free so they do not strip natural oils from the skin.
  •  Remove all make up. Allow your skin to rest from time to time by not wearing any make up at all. When you do wear makeup make sure you cleanse your skin and use a clean moist wash cloth to wipe away excess water; then apply moisturizer.
  • If you are going to be in the sun for an extended amount use sunscreen for protection from those harmful UV rays.
  • Exfoliate. Remember this means to simply remove the dead skin.
  •  DRINK WATER, DRINK WATER, and DRINK WATER at least 8-10 glasses per day.
  •  Eat healthy, get plenty of rest, and exercise
